4, Mom, Dad and two kids

Do your kids play soccer?
Yes, our daughter Abby plays soccer typically in the fall and spring but she's taking a break this spring as she's doing softball. She's excited about fall soccer though later this year.

Type of home:
House

Why you hosted?
My husband and I are happy to help the coaches out, it's been a really rewarding experience for us and in return it helps them out. It's been a great experience for the kids too, they get to know someone from a different background and culture and hear about their life experiences. Coach Amy has become part of our family and we're thrilled to have the opportunity to host her.

How you worked it out, having an extra person staying with you?
We have an extra bedroom so it works really well for us. We didn't have to do any re-arrangements at all.

Most enjoyable experience?
I would have to say being able to spend the holidays together and special occasions because we get to share our traditions and create great memories. Also having the kids have someone to look up to has been a highlight as well. I'd definitely recommend hosting!

Kids played AYSO, son was 19 and finished playing, daughter was 17 and about to finish, Dad had coached them both for 10+ years

Type of home:
Three bedroom house

Why you hosted?
We hosted to help out, nobody was available on the 1st day of camp to host, an email was sent out via the community link website and 7 hosts stepped forward, we were at the top of the list so, Stuart came to us.

How you worked it out, having an extra person staying with you?
Luckily we had a spare bedroom so we had plenty of room, Stuart became part of the family and is welcome back any time.

Most enjoyable experience?
Stuart managed to get tickets for a San Jose Earthquakes soccer game, Myself and Molly (daughter) as well as two of her friends went to the game with Stuart and had a blast. We hosted Stuart for 3 months, we have also hosted Simon Cook on two occasions in the past so we have done plenty of hosting but we'd still open our doors in the future.

To experience a different culture, that would be beneficial for the children

How you worked it out, having an extra person staying with you?
We have a self contained apartment downstairs. The coach or coaches (sometimes we host more than one!) have their own bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and living room but hang out all over the house with the family!

Most enjoyable experience?
Interaction with the kids. It was very sad to see Rob leave the first time we hosted. We held a goodbye party for him and it was very emotional!

Would you host again?
Will be our third year of hosting, so definitely will be doing it again!

Family name: The Pauli Family

Location:
Huntington Beach, SoCal

Make up of family:
Family of seven, (five boys ages 10 and under),

Do your kids play soccer?
My boys had not had much soccer experience before last summer, but were truly inspired by the camps and the coaches. We ultimately signed two of the boys up for a fall AYSO season which they enjoyed as well.

Type of home:
Four bedroom townhouse

Why you hosted?
Our family decided to host a coach initially because we thought it would be an enriching experience for the boys to bond with a coach from camp and create some special memories. We encourage exercise and athleticism in our children and thought the exposure to someone who takes sports seriously would be a great lesson.

How you worked it out, having an extra person staying with you?
We moved two of the boys out of their room to provide the space for the coach.

Most enjoyable experience?
When asked, our boys agreed, the best part of having coaches stay with our family was sharing stories and playing outside together. We were impressed with the responsibility, respectfulness, and maturity of the coaches who stayed in our home with our family.

Would you host again?
We are excited to have the opportunity again this summer to host some coaches.

Family name: Shelley Simmon

Location: Portland, Oregon

Make up of family: 4 - husband, wife, 2 boys – 12 and 17 yrs …and a dog

Do your kids play soccer? In the past yes, not much currently

Type of home: Normal suburban house

Why you hosted? In 2003/04 I was somewhat involved with our community rec club, volunteered where I was needed and was just familiar with the UKISC program. In 2005 I jumped in the club with both feet and really became hands on as a club board member. Realizing how much the sport was growing and how much our community opened their homes to these wonderful coaches we added two more camps in 2006 and in 2008 added a spring break camp. In 2007, our first camp of the summer I believe was the largest camp in the NW with 11 coaches which says a lot for just over 400 players. This was the first camp my family had hosted a coach.

The previous years we had just kind of held back from hosting. We had always organized a BBQ for the families and coaches to meet and get acquainted the Sunday before the camps and made sure the coaches had passes to the Nike and/or Adidas employees stores …we just didn't feel we had the time to "entertain" with both my husband and I working full time and the two kids always going in opposite directions it just seemed too demanding.

Much to our surprise these coaches are very self sufficient and quiet honestly do not need entertained. We have been amazed over the years how every coach just seems to slide right into our daily family routine (or lack there of!) without complaining. Of course they all love to see the city sites and watching a Timbers game is a must! They also enjoy just laying low and are content relaxing on the sofa given the opportunity.

How you worked it out, having an extra person staying with you? No, we happen to have a full basement that is all theirs.

Most enjoyable experience? We have a few –
In 2007 we took 3 coaches on a camping / waterskiing trip to Wallowa Lake, about a 6 hour drive east of Portland. The trip was an eventful one but a good time was had by all.

In 2009 we had several come back for holiday to visit us – priceless!

I think the most enjoyable is keeping n touch. We have met and hosted several coaches over the years and with facebook, email and skype it is wonderful just to hear from them one and a while. They truly become part of the family!

Would you host again? Yes, we have lost count of how many coaches have been in our home. We keep in touch with most and have enjoyed the opportunity!
